Au Sable River Guided Fishing

Michigan’s Au Sable River is one of the nations well known trout streams. The productive water of the Au Sable is made up of the North, South, and mainstream.

The Au Sable is a good-sized stream with prolific hatches, and a good number of quality trout. The lower sections of the river can be good for steelhead as well.

The Au Sable starts north of Grayling Michigan and runs over 100 miles to Lake Huron.

The river runs south from it’s origin, runs along or next to the Manistee River for about 12 miles, then heads east and starts it’s quest to Lake Huron. Flowing through Grayling past Burton’s landing, which is the start of the “Flies Only” section, also known as the “Holy Water”. This section extends almost nine miles downstream to Wakeley Bridge. This section of water is a wade fisherman’s paradise. Gravel, Pools, riffles, great hatches, and easy to wade is why this is the “Holy Water”.

The water from Wakeley Bridge to Mio pond is also great water. The water is larger and has more deep pools for trout to hide in. Wading is not as easy as upstream in some areas.

Good numbers of larger trout can be found in this section. Great hatches are the norm here, with the biggest being the Hexagenia Limbata or the “Hex”. Good access to this section can be found at the Whirlpool off Cherry Creek Road and at Parmalee Bridge.

From Mio Dam to McKinley Bridge the river produces some of the biggest trout each season. Large Browns and Rainbows can be found feeding on hatches, or chasing streamers. The water is deep here, and the use of guide is a major plus. Fishing from a boat is the best way to go in this section of river.

The North and South Branches fish just as well as the main stream. The South branch of the river is also a favorite for the Hex hatch that takes place in late June.

The lower Au sable from Foote Dam to Lake Huron can also produce some great Trout. Know for its runs of Salmon and Steelhead, this section of river can produce some great fishing for fall Steelhead.
